About the Artist

Artist Biography

Born in England and raised in the Australian outback, I developed an early appreciation for art, travel, and the natural world. From a young age, I found joy in drawing and sketching, using art as a way to observe and interpret the world around me. Growing up surrounded by the contrasting landscapes and the vast, rugged beauty of the Australian outback helped shape my appreciation for the character and atmosphere of different places.

In my early twenties, I moved to America after traveling throughout Europe, where I experienced a variety of cultures, architecture, and landscapes. These experiences broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for the distinctive qualities of the places I encountered. Eventually settling on the East End of Long Island, I was drawn to the area's natural beauty, from its sweeping beaches and coastal waters to its open fields and changing skies. It was here that my childhood interest in drawing developed into a deeper commitment to painting.

I am inspired by the interplay of light, color, and texture found in the natural environment. My work reflects a continuing fascination with the landscape and the subtle details that make each place unique. Whether capturing expansive coastal views, the changing seasons across open fields, or the quiet presence of distant mountains, I aim to convey not only the appearance of a scene but also the feeling and atmosphere it evokes.

Now based in Wethersfield, Connecticut, I continue to find inspiration in the natural environments of New England. The region's varied landscapes, from its rugged shoreline and rolling countryside to its wooded hills and mountain vistas, provide an endless source of inspiration for my work. Through my paintings, I hope to encourage viewers to pause, look more closely at the world around them, and discover the beauty often found in familiar places.

My work reflects a lifelong connection to travel, observation, and the natural world, bringing together the varied experiences of my journey from England and Australia to the landscapes of America. Largely self-taught, I also spent time studying drawing, etching, painting, and mixed media at Parsons New School, as well as oil and acrylic painting techniques under artist Susan Ecker in East Hampton, NY.

Painting Style

My painting style embraces the expressive qualities of palette-knife painting, using the blade to apply, layer, and shape paint directly onto the canvas. This technique allows me to create texture, depth, and a sense of movement, making the paint itself an integral part of each finished work. Rather than relying solely on fine brushwork, I use deliberate strokes and varied application of color to capture the character and atmosphere of each landscape.

The palette knife allows me to explore the changing textures and natural contrasts found throughout New England, from the shifting light across coastal waters to the rugged contours of rocky shorelines, open fields, and distant mountains. By building up layers of paint, I am able to create dimension and atmosphere, allowing the marks left by the blade to give each painting its own distinctive character.

Through this tactile approach, I work to balance the recognizable features of a landscape with a more expressive interpretation of its mood and energy.
